Our Story

A Little History
Behind Our Service

On our first day as military service members we learn the importance of the team to which we now belong. Regardless of service, it is ingrained in us that we are bound to the men and women on our right and left, in front of us and behind us. We must always be faithful to each other. We serve selflessly putting the needs of our fellow Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coasties, Guardians, and our units and our Nation ahead of our own. Yet at some point … whether that’s three, ten, twenty, or thirty years … we step away from active military service to the civilian sector. The Department of Defense (DoD) immerses new service members of all ranks into deliberate training so that they acquire the needed military mindset to serve as vital members of the military. However, when those service members are ready to move back into the civilian sector, the DoD-mandated Transition Assistance Programs are insufficient to provide them with all they need.

The Leader Transition Institute (LTI) was launched in 2018 after the first session of what has become its flagship program, Changing Focus: Moving From We to Me. The program, designed for service members, veterans, and their spouses who are within 24 months of transitioning from active duty to the civilian sector, fills the gaps left by the DoD-mandated transition programs. At that first session, held near Baltimore, MD, the teaching team learned that First Responders and Educators would benefit from a similar program, so they decided to develop an organization with room to grow.

Believing it’s best to get good before getting big, LTI concentrated its efforts on Changing Focus: Moving From You to Me. They’ve crisscrossed the United States bringing the program to North Carolina, Florida, the District of Columbia, and California. In 2020, the team moved into the virtual arena because of COVID-19. Nearly 400 Service members, veterans, and their spouses in over 35 states, in six countries, across four continents have now participated in 44 cohorts of the program.

Over the past several years, the corporate training division has worked with emerging and executive leaders helping them to improve their abilities to communicate and lead. Simultaneously, the LTI Academy provides a variety of self-paced and cohort-based courses for individuals, as well as LTI’s Maxwell Speaker Club.
